Hello guys, thanks for all the help provided so far on the forum. Your input is great and really helpful.

I have a 1998 Pajero iO SWB and I would like to give it some lift. I thought of going with Koni shocks and Dobinsons or King Springs but the issue is that my struts are the MR455401 which do not fit the Koni inserts.

Would you guys know any solution? Maybe replace my struts with ones that fit?

Thanks in advance.

koni insert

One way of doing it is custom made body strut....If you find another way, please, let me know.

Thank you very much Claude

Thank you very much Claude and sorry fpr the delayed reply.

Can I replace my KYB 334442 with the KYB 334405 to fit the KONI inserts?

And if so what springs should I use? Would the rear suspension be affected?

Sorry if I sound stupid but I am a bit lost in all this!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks again Claude, Check

Thanks again Claude,

Check out data from KONI

it says that it would fit all struts appart from:

MR319792 and

MR455401

so any other strut should fit, no?

koni

From that listing, yes....but reality is different. I was told that Koni have made these insert based on EU market when the io came on the market. That the io strut  could have been made with different size tubing at that time ( a bit bigger) . All Australian stock have been made with a 2 inch tubing (cost effective) and that tubing is too small for the insert. Koni didn't bother changing their listing.

This is from what I was told, and that was a couple of year ago....it may be different now and you may have a different outcome, I mean, some people in EU got them fitted on their car.....

Again, if you find a way, let me know as if I still have the io, it is something I would like to do.

Claude, if I understand

Claude, if I understand correctly you are saying that the on the european models it would work?

I am located in Europe but the car is a Japanese import!

koni insert

That is what I understood, some would work but not all....

Most strut are now made with the 2 inches tubing that is 50.8 mm OD....too small for the insert to fit.

What happen is that some strut have been made with a tubing that can take the insert, a bit bigger than the 2 inches. I am not sure about what size exactly, or when the size of tubing changed but they do exist !!

One way to check is to measure the outside diameter, if it is over 51 mm, it might take the insert, under....it won't.

I have checked several io in Australia, none were over 51 mm.

A local Koni seller told me that he had to refund a few io owner that have tried to make it work but I do know some people in Greece have made it. This make me think that some io in EU do have the strut that can take the insert....as to which one....not sure....

Another way around this, that was proposed to me, is that koni can fit a "wet kit" on your strut but the cost is higher. They actually rebuilt your strut with their internal gear.

I see, I will check that out

I see, I will check that out and let you know!

Regarding the different heights of the two struts, do they matter at all?

.

Yes it does if you want to fit bigger tyres. This said, there is way around this if you have the lower plate...you can cut the tube and extend it. I just found a pic of one strut that have the koni, and you can see the bottom of it being extended as well. There are other pic in the forum but I have to search for them !

Coil over could be another option....but I never done these so cannot help much ....
