I picked my 3 door iO (iO coupe :P) up about 2 weeks ago and i love it!

It came with the TJM nudge bar & lights.  So far the only changes i've made are the window wipers - they were past it.

Hopefully before too long I'll get a bit of a suspension lift, some mud tyres and some underbody protection.

Kudos to admin for teaching me how to upload photos!

Cant wait to see the pics of it lifted on muds!
What Muds are you planing on using?  I have been researching them for a while to try and decide what the best option is.

Im a bit unsure of what mud

Im a bit unsure of what mud tyres to get.  It kind of depends on what tyre size i go for and that depends on what suspension I run and if i get new rims.  I have a tentitive budget of about 2 grand for 5 tyres + suspension lift.... maybe a little more for rims.  I'll just see what i can get for that money i guess.

I did a search for the

I did a search for the quietest MTs and its seems thats the Kumho KL71s, I found a few forums with reviews and comparisons and despite there cheaper price than most, they are what i feel is most suitable for what I want out of tires on the IO.
Good thread on them here http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/tyres-wheels-38/tyre-topic-kumho-kl71-29061/

Pros

  1. Quiet
  2. cheap
  3. Good in mud
  4. Good on road and
  5. Great in the Wet on the road (important to me)
  6. Good on sand
  7. Good all around for an MT

Cons

  1. Faster wearing, softer compound (a by product of been good in the wet on the road)
  2. May have weaker sidewalls ?
  3. people dont think your as cool because you dont have BF good MTs angry

The fact our 4x4s are light compared to most 4x4 means the softer compound/faster wearing is probably a good thing, or atleast gives them a (soft/ware to weight ratio ) comparable to other tires on heavy 4x4?

People stake sidewalls on ALL tires, our cars are light, I dont think its an argument?

A place in Morisset (morisset tires i think they are called) quoted me $188 got 31"/10.5/15s or $240 for 245/75/16s so there smaller ones are probably even cheaper ortho i dont think they do anything smaller, apart from a 225/75/16 (29.5") Kmart will beat anything by 10% to i hear :)

Let me know what other options you come up with and prices you find!

the kl71's are a great tyre. i have 33" ones on my 3.5 swb paj. they have driven all the challenging lanes in england and some in wales. never got stuck or a puncture even when driving on flint tracks.

they are great in the snow, wet mud, sand etc but also good on the road, even in the wet. they are indeed nice and quiet on the road too and as they are speed rated to about 115mph allow good motorway speeds as well.

there are no sidewall strenght issues afaik and mine have had lots of rut driving where the risk of cutting etc is at its greatist

Hmmm, those kuhmos look like

Hmmm, those kuhmos look like a really good option.  The 31/10.5/r15 would look MASSIVE!  I had a set of kuhmos on my last car and I loved them.

Like you were saying most of the cons for that tyre aren't as applicable for a light weight 4x4 & the guys on the patrol forum really seemed to like them.

You wont be able to fit any

You wont be able to fit any bigger than 29in without getting different rims because of the front strut, 225/75 is a good size on the standard rims if your willing to put up with the loss of power, 2 door might not be too bad, good thing is they are cheaper than 215 sizes because more are made, i have 225/70 federal at's and am really happy with them and are only $170au each, cheaper tyres are a good option while your working out what size you want.

Also the speedo is out about 12 kms i think at 100km/h.

Before

After

so im pretty happy with the amount of lift....... The kit is advertised as 28mm lift at the front.  So its a boat load more than that

Good to hear you lifted your

Good to hear you lifted your paj! the swb should have really good clearence angles with the dobinsons, they are much firmer than stock a little more uncomfortable on the road wouldnt you say?  Worth it though ;)

Did you go with the swb rear springs or lwb i think the lwb are slightly larger? only a couple of mm...

Also are the rear springs on yours sitting at a slight angle on the top mounts, just wondering because mine is slightly off centre, i think because of the angle of the chassis?

look forward to seeing some pics!! :)

Nice. The springs are made to

Nice.

The springs are made to be used with std Struts, the KYB struts have the spring seats 25mm higher, so its close to what its ment to be.
740 + 28 =  768  + the KYBs 25mm =793mm

The springs are super firm.

The springs are super firm.  But the car handles alot better.  I think my old struts were buggered, the car use to feel really 'floaty' around corners, and if you hit a bump the car would take along time to settle.  Now everything feels alot tighter.

I think i went with the SWB rear springs... they are plenty firm enough.

Thinking about it, that realy

Thinking about it, that realy doesnt leave much travel left for droop?  I know you mentioned it EBS, But thats showing you have about a 50mm Lift. that leaves close to 0mm for droop.
I measured my car a while ago and came up with aprox 50mm droop (was on an angle so hard to get exact amount)

If this is tru that makes the setup a little unsafe!

Measure the droop if you get the chance. see what that 800mm grows to as you jack it up.

Sweet dude! that should get

Sweet dude! that should get you out of trouble anyway, 235/60/16 is a wierd size, they should give you a nice firm base offroad as they are wider than stock!

at least you wont lose any power!! my 225/70's drain mine a bit...

Well it never set the world

Well it never set the world alight the ol' 1.6, I would say it still feels pretty close to what it was.

So you have the Dobinsons

So you have the Dobinsons lifted front springs and the 25mm higher KYB struts to achieve that lift?

Do your struts max out extremely easily? I ask because I originally had 2 inch Dobinsons springs fitted to my stock struts - and even driving over a pebble would cause the struts to max out. It was horrible, and dangerous.

I am trying to find out of the 25mm KYB struts actually have abit more travel - if so I am looking to place them with my 28mm dobinsons springs like you run. But I am worried the only difference is the spring perch, which of course means they will max out like my first lift

Bogged

So i decided to take a drive along wattagan forrest road on a trip back from my parents recently.  I was planning to jump back on the freeway via martinsville but took the wrong turn and ended up at this creek.  I checked the depth and the creeked looked crossable.... but i didn't check what turned out to be a gully right where my left hand wheels were tracking :S and i was stuck fast.

Luckily some guys came and pulled my out.

I had water almost up to the passengers seat.  My CD stacker got drenched as did the carpets so they both had to go in the bin.

I will be a bit more through checking creeks in future.

Before christmas I grabbed a

Before christmas I grabbed a JVC head unit from supercheap auto and some rhino heavy duty roof racks from ebay.  And over new years took the car upto Hervey Bay and Fraser Island.  The iO loved it up there other than the engine getting a little warm at times.

I had thought the driving was going to be quite challanging, I have had to dig my self out a few times at stockton but the trails & beaches i drove on fraser were all pretty hard packed.  Definately a great place for an adventure

Carpet

I shampooed and dried my carpet after a similar incident. Came out looking like new :)

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!
