I recently got a weird sing in my gearbox and after doing some research the majority of the people told me without having the gearbox be redone I should put a littlebit of thicker oil in to see if that might soothen the sound abit. Ok so I went and baught Polly Molly Auto transmission oil (After I explained to the Owner of Polly Molly Oils) he said that should do the trick. Well after paying R390 for 500ml wink i commited myself today to change the oil. Ok being a nice lazy sunday I had to force myself to get underneath the IO. After slapping myself a couple of time to stay awake (Sunday lazy afternoon HA HA) I saw the input point (a nut) is at a very difficuilt place right above the xhaust flex pipe. has anyone ever done a change yourself and how did you manage to get the oil inside without spilling half of it?

Not on my iO

I've changed transmission oils on all of my vehicles myself, but my iO is an automatic, so I've no idea where the filler is on the 5 speed - depending on where the filler hole is located, there are two tricks - either a length of hose/tube & a funnel and fill it from above - or - a length of hose/tube and a gear oil pump for the situations where there is absolutely no access from above (differentials & transfer case).

The type pictured below is cheap and readily available - costs less that the oil you will spill using any other method - but will take a while because they don't move that much "oil per pump"

I note you mention automatic gearbox oil - are you sure that's what you want to use?  Automatic transmission fluid is usually quite a bit lighter (in terms of viscocity) than a manual transmission oil - 500ml is also no where near enough - that transmission is going to take at minimum, a couple of litres. (the manual calls for 2.4 litres of 75w90 GL4)

Thanks for the picture Fordem

Thanks for the picture Fordem now only to get such a pump around. Now Im not only going to add 500ml in, ill be draining 500ml of the current oil in and add the auto oil. The guy said the auto transmission oil is thicker and thats why he recommends it. Ya the drain plug is straight at the bottom but the hole where you add it is impossible to access for our normal folks without the right tools, but with your idea it will work. Thanks

pump

I have a 500ml metal syringue for that but you can use something like that http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/STM-1-Litre-Tom-Thumb-Oil-Pump-Brake-Fluid-Auto-Trans-Cylinder-Lube-Aussie-Made-/280926049661?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41687f557d  just need to be properly cleaned if you do different oil.

Happy io

Argh noooo!

Man don't put heavier oil in your gearbox! It won't lubricate the bearings as well at high rpm as the lighter oil. I'd run a foaming agent like nulon to muffle the whine before i'd think of running a heavier oil.
The number of blown discovery diffs and gearboxes i've seen 5000kms down thw track after running heavier oil is not funny.
