I have a 2001 5-door petrol Pajero iO, which has served me faithfully all year driving through South Africa!

It runs beautifully but I've noticed a higher than usual engine oil consumption and some oil making it's way into the coolant reservoir, but not an excessive amount. The engine cap is always clean of sludge, the exhaust runs clean and the engine doesn't over heat.

I'm aware that it might be the dreaded gasket, but I was under the impression that you nearly always had engine 'sludge' with that.

Any ideas?

head gasket

the head gasket seperates:

coolant ports
oil return ports
HP oil feed
combustion chamber

you can have all/some of the above contaminated.

my vote would be on the oil feed to the camshaft leaking into the coolant system as it is under higher pressure than the coolant system.

I would say run some general good quality brand engine "stop leak" for coolant and clean the reservoir and monitor - may be OK.
