I have 99 model 1.8 gdi with auto transmission, i have checked the specs of IO on multiple sites and its written every where that it has 4 gears auto transmission. While driving i noticed that its only engaging 3 grears when overdrive is off, is 4th gear is overdrive ? Can you guys please confirm that should it be 3 Gears Plus OD or 4 Gears plus OD.

I am thinking for a engine swap as io is burning oil around 1 litre for 700 - 800 KMS and giving clouds of smoke on suddenly acceleration or at high RPMS. Secondly its having idle issues as once it is at running tempertaure, rpm keep fluctuating and goes too low, plus the fuel consumption has gone too bad giving around 7-8 Km per litre. Havent gone for a compression check but the way its smoke and burns oil i think the engine is goner and any maintainance wouldnt be helpful. Need suggestions on this issue too.

Overdrive is 4th

Auto transmissions in most 1990's-early 2000's cars have the overdrive button. They are designed to be driven with overdrive on most of the time, and you use the button to drop back to 3rd gear for overtaking, hills, high speed corners, towing, etc. the button gives more control like a manual would have.

As for the other issue, I'm no expert but a few members have had similar issues with various fixes. It could be related to sensors or it could be engine wear.

All the best.

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!
