Hi all

I'm living in remote part of Botswana with little help available so any advice appreciated.

My IO, a 2000 model, 2l 5 door is misbehaving badly:

Little power to go up hills/inclines

Judders when idling, poor pull off and sometimes just cuts out.

Once i reach 60km it feels like its resisting

Any pressure like driving in sand or driving at 70/80 engine light comes on for a while.

I'm at a loss what do think or what do to. Any ideas please folks!

You need to understand this one thing...

- there is very little that we can do from a distance - if you're not mechanically inclined, you need to find someone competent to work on the vehicle.

Having said that - a 2.0 litre iO can have either a GDI (Gasolene Direct Injection) or an MPI (Multi Point Injection) engine, although they are basically the same engine, there are significant differences in how they work, and we need to know which engine your car has - are there any badges on the outside that say GDI, is there a GDI Eco light in the speedometer near the other lights (it should light green at idle) or a plastic cover saying GDI over the engine?

When last was the engine given a "tune-up" - new plugs, filters etc.?  Do you have access to a code reader to find out why the check engine lioght is coming on/

Hi Thanks for reply. It is a

Hi Thanks for reply.

It is a GDI.  Someone did say this could be the problem but he hasn't checked it out.  Basic service was done 2 weeks back which hasn't improved the problems. I've tried 3 diagnostic machines - 2 didn't work on my car and the other only came up with an airbag fault so i was then told it must be a mechanical fault that wouldn't show up on diagnostic machine. If i can offer any other info please just ask. Sorry, i'm a real armature when it comes to cars. Appreciate any advise.

What's a basic service?

To me - a basic service is an oil & filter change - the bare minimum.  I didn't ask about that, I asked about a tune up, and even went so far as to suggest some of the things that might have been done in the tune up.

I'm not certain what you mean by "It is a GDI.  Someone did say this could be the problem" - why would the engine being GDI be considered as a problem?  More & more manufacturers are switching to the direct injection technology, not everyone calls it GDI, but it's becoming quite popular - I own two GDI engined vehicles, one of which is a Pajero iO.

Regarding the code readers, as long as that check engine light is turning on, there is a code set, and a way to read it, you're going to need to find someone with the equipment to read the codes - on my iO, the only thing that can set a check engine light is the engine control unit - airbag faults cause the SRS light to turn on, ABS lights cause the ABS light to come on, transmission faults cause the neutral light to flash.

Back to the GDI engine - one of the common problems with GDI engines is that they "coke up" - carbon can build up on the back of the intake valves and this is one of the possible problems that you are facing - fixing it requires removal of the cylinder head to clean the valves - unless you have access to a Mitsubishi dealer with specialized equipment - but it is not the only possiblity ...

Hi again Sorry, i should

Hi again

Sorry, i should clarify.

Service included change of oil, new spark plugs,  new air filter, engine flush.

What you say about gdi engine is useful to know. I meant that my IO has a gdi pump and was advised a problem could be there which possibly is the coke up you mentioned.

I'll keep searching for a mechanic who has a diagnostic machine that will work with my car - got to be one somewhere.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts
