rear brake adjustment

I’ve been experiencing some brake issues recently so I decided to open up the rear drums and see exactly what setup is on the Australian issue Io’s.

To remove the drums you need two screws to press the drum off the axle, the bolts that hold the top radiator supports are perfect and you can take one from each side without effecting the radiator.

Once the drums were off I saw that the auto-adjusters are the same crap design you find on early 80’s Holdens, they actuate from the twisting motion going forward instead of reverse and as a result if you don’t do any heavy braking for a while the adjusters will not be able to tension up the shoes and your brakes will no longer auto adjust. The reverse actuating mechanisms are beter as they have ore throw however also will stop working if they gum-up or you don't do any heavy braking.

Underneath, On the backing plates there is a small rubber bung you can remove to expose the adjuster without needing to remove the wheel or drum (when you look through the hole it looks like a narrow serrated wheel-like cog a bit like a coin) and with a flat blade screwdriver you can lever against the edge of the wheel to wind the tension up. If you are levering in the correct direction you should hear some clicks as the auto-adjust lever inside the brakes rides over the serrations on the wheel.

I jacked each rear wheel off the ground in turn with the gearbox in neutral - handbrake off, keep winding the tensioner up until the rear brake just drags when you rotate the wheel both directions. Repeat on the other side.

This resulted in noticeably less nose-dive under heavy braking and the handbrake now holds easily on 45deg slope.

Hand brake

The front brake pad and the adjustment of the rear brake are one of the rare thing that I do myself. I have noticed that the rear need doing often or the hand brake get crapy.  One advantage, they don't wear out to quickly! mine are the original (140000km) I have done the front twice, last recently.

Thanks for that info - I'll check mine.

I get another brake problem - a slight pulsing, most noticeable when coming to a slow stop. It doesn't happen if I pull on the handbrake by itself so I think it must be in the front. Maybe need to skim the discs, though they look quite new. Any ideas welcome...

Probably a warped rotor

A pulsating pedal when braking is usually caused by a warped rotor, which is not necessarily visible to the naked eye - however - at least on my iO, the rotors are not secured to the hubs (as they are on every thing else i've taken the wheels off of), so it is theoretically possible for rust or dirt to build up on the mating surfaces and this can cause a phenomenon known as "run out" which causes the exact same movement of the caliper.

Before you skim the rotor (which, by the way, I don't recommend - just fit new ones), or change any parts - remove the calipers so that you can pull the rotors off and wire brush the mating surfaces until they are CLEAN and then reassemble & test.

My handbrake lever nearly was at 90 deg to hold on a slope, now it is 2 or 3 clicks to hold

hand brake

90° angle! that's like another gear stick, without gear:) I have adjusted a lots of rear brake, a while ago, but I have to say that on the io the difference is close to unbelievable! and really worth doing. My driveway is a good test but as a sign, if I have more than 12 "clicks" it does get done (to have around 7 or 8 "clicks". I give it a good clean inside (don't breath the dust!) , a small sanding on the shoes, just enough to change the color, and a good sanding on the inside of the drum, and remove the surface rust on the inside opening. For the adjustment I do what you advised.

on my uk spec pinin , i have

on my uk spec pinin , i have disc brakes on the back but with drums inside for the handbrake, unusual not seen this on anything else , but seems ok so far , just passed mot (our yearly test) so must be ok at the moment

Handbrake

I know at least one othe car with that hybrid disc/drum setup for the handbrake - TVR Cerbera.

so NONE of the Australian iOs have Discs?
