Hello all,

I'm preparing the little one for a Simpson Trip later this year (Check up coming trips section - hosted by BobOz) and want to upgrade my rear shocks.  The new-ish standard OEM KYB's faded out on me last year within 15 minutes of leaving Mt. Dare on my way to Dalhousie Springs.  The upgrade in tyre size (and subsequently the unsprung mass) and extra load to be self sufficient for a few weeks didn't help.

Anyway...... if you've come unstuck trying to find decent replacement rear shocks, rest assured, they do exist.  I'm looking at a Foam Cell Shock

DON'T ASK FOR IO SHOCKS....... you'll get the usual NM series of questions.  Ask instead for one of the following.

Holden Rodeo 1988-1996 TF Rears

Nissan Terrano II 1997-2000 R20 Rears

Ford F350 4x4 1982 -onwards FRONTS

Toyota Hilux 4x4 1979-1985 LN36 & LN46 Rears

Mitsubishi Delica 1989-2004 Rears.

Brands for Foam Cell shocks include Iron Man, Pedders, Tough Dog, and Old Man Emu.  I'm probably going to go the Iron Mans (Part number 24636FE at $154 each).

Hope this helps and isn't a double up... I know Singlecell mentioned the Hilux shocks, but by his own admission, he wasn't sure what model they came off.

rear shock

I have found an alternative too and unless already done check my built thread post...151...You have to play with the bushes as they have different diameter fitting. I am very happy with them.

I would be very careful when buying shock from other car, most of these are a lot heavier and could not suit your suspension....too long... too stiff....

While there are a lot of better shock, some do get very firm and I would stay away from them....personal opinion, not an expert....

From memory you have the king spring on your car, they are firm, the one I got might suit (and they are cheap), just check the lenght (maximun lift before the spring move from his seat )

While you are here, do you autorise the site to display your bash plate design. Your link to them is no longer working.  You don't have to, but that will be nice :)Thanks

Happy io and maybe see you on the track....

Hello Claude, I must admit I

Hello Claude,

I must admit I haven't read your build thread just yet, but I will now  :)  I've been a bit absent from the site for a while so I've got a bit of catching up to do.

I noticed Singlecell's smashed up car on Gumtree selling off various bits and I thought I'd have a look at his set up to see if it's worth buying.  Probably not as I really like the driveability of my io and don't want to do anything extreme.

Yep, your memory serves you right.  I run the King springs on the rear and just the standard springs on the front with the raised pan struts.

At the moment I have OEM KYB's on the rear that fade out pretty quick over corrugations with the heavier tyres and increased load I carry.  Today I've done some research and although I don't know compressed or extended lengths, the Iron Man 24636FE (foam cell larger diametre) shocks seem to fit - on paper at least.  My local distributor, FourPlay 4x4 said he can order a set in for me to compare with one of mine before purchase.

The other thing I'd like to consider is rear spring spacers to get perhaps another inch to 2 inches lift on the rear...... it sits less than level when loaded and the car is my play car that only gets driven when going away and loaded.  That will help with the coil dropping out on full shock extension..... my concern though is that the shock doesn't bottom out before the bump stops do.

Most of this is probably covered in your thread so I'll head over there for a look.  I'm after a driveable set up not to do the extreme stuff articulation stuff, more to handle the corrugations which play havoc with unsprung mass eg: tyres.

Cheers....Fab-io.

....and YES....the bash plate

....and YES....the bash plate design is to share.  We're all fighting the "lack of off the shelf after market parts" battle, so any contribution I can make is up for grabs.  After all....isn't that what we're all here for?

Hello Claude, Wow.....you've

Hello Claude,

Wow.....you've been busy.

I looked at your build thread and the spacers you added to the front struts is exactly what I wanted to do to mine and just keep with the higher pan "factory" struts and  standard springs, I then wanted to match the rear ride height to suit by adding spring spacers to the rear giving it more height and reducing the risk of the coils dropping out.....then the rear shocks to suit.

The Gabriel shocks you used..... how resistant are they to shocker fade over extreme corrugations when fully loaded?  I have the five door so I naturally have a bit extra junk in my trunk so to speak.

Man..... I seriously want a set of those front spacers.  I was looking at this site for a compatible option....http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280928716024?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Monroe Adventure Series

I don't know if they're available in Australia (I would think they should be), but Monroe offers an off-road specific shock for the rear of the iO (#D7002), it is the same length as stock.

I have no idea how resistant

I have no idea how resistant the Gabriel shock are. I think that the Gabriel is a basic shock, so is our Kyb, but the one I fitted are for the hilux, the hilux is a heavier car and this should mean that this shock on the io should be better that the original Kyb shock.

One warning, too much load on corrugated road will bring damages to your car, if not the shock, it will be something else to break. It could even damage the chassis. A too firm shock could make things worse. You probably tried to remove some weight, remove some more !, or load your car differently (heavy gear more towards the front of the car).....try lower tyre pressure...stop more often, and let things cool down, damages to the shock is mainly because of too much heat by overworking. Having a stiff spring and a softer shock, will make the shock working on a very small section only and will overheat very quickly. The corrugated road will find the weak point... fast !!

I use air bag in the rear of my car, great to adjust the level, but I heard of some failing on corrugated road (more on heavier car), spacer could be good, or even reset your spring, or get king spring to make what you want.

The front spacer are great, as mentioned by other before, over 50 mm and your CV will be put at risk. Your car have around 25 mm lift already, keep that in mind. Natsteer have a very good design on his thread....and he have a similar set up (newer strut, older spring)

Last year I started to get "my own" longer shock and I have been in contact with "Rancho" sales@rancho.com.au> John was helpful and they make adjustable shock. If you give him the measurement, or even send them a old shock, they will make one set to match. That should cost around $400 and they will come with the good fixation.

Thanks for the bash plate, I will get the relevant thread up to date.

Hope this help.

Happy io and Happy New Year.

Rear Suspension springs

Hi Claude

Need help on my rear suspension springs. I've already replaced the standard shock with a Monroe 4x4 adventure shocks (D7002). They are standard lenght but only time will tell if they work well enough. I do still want to reset my rear coil springs to be longer; as this is the cheapest option for me. The rear still feels to soft. I think the springs might be the problem.

What would your suggestion be on resetting them to a longer lenght and what should that lenght be? there are a few places nearby that can do this in 1 day.

I was thinking of at least a 20% stretch in lenght.

Thanks

Ettienne

Thanks from E van eck

rear spring

If your rear spring feel soft, don't bother resetting them, you are wasting your money. Resetting them will adjust the height but it will not make them firmer. As for the length, this will depend of the lift you want. My advice....replace them. As a general rule, when lifting your car, you should fit firmer spring to compensate the lost of handling. If the spring feel soft, and if you make it longer (then lifting your car) the handling of your car at higher speed will be worse.

In Australia we have the Mazda Astina BA, the front spring of this car fit very well in the rear of the io, and it give about 40 mm lift and the spring is a bit firmer. This is a good alternative...safe...and cheap.

If you carry a lot of weight, we have the kingspring, a bit more expensive, and firmer than the Astina, about the same lift.

Happy io

In mine i have hilux es3000

In mine i have hilux es3000 pro comp shocks and i find them really good. i used part# - EXP-324506 to suit 81-85 4wd hilux or surf. these do need to use  323 ba astina front springs and 1 inch 80 series front spring spacer as without the spacer they just get to being fully compressed as they're to suit a hilux with 2.5-3 inch lift.

extended length 24.84 inches (656mm)

compressed length 14.82 inches (376mm)

travel length 10.02 inches (254mm)

$141.30usd for the pair shipped from USA to brisbane through Summit Racing

for just 323 springs or king/dobinsons then the EXP-322506 seems alright, in hindsight i would have gone these

extended length 22.58 inches (573mm)

compressed length 13.74 inches (348mm)

travel length 8.87 inches (225mm

check what size your eyelets are on the shocks, if the centre is 24.5mm the same as the pro comps i fitted then fit the superpro part numbers below for a correct fit on the pajero io. they were approximatey $15 a pair.

spf 2178 12k

spf 2178 16k

some shock companies seem to use the same shock part numbers for triton, hilux, rodeo, ranger so if the different branded shocks all use the same size eyelets then the above mentioned bushes are what's needed.

Ive got mine mounted with the body at the bottom extending upwards and have no problem fouling anything even before putting in the coil spacers.

Seriously - have you tried searching...

You've just asked one of the most frequently asked, and answered, questions on this forum - there is even a thread on nothing but lifts...

The most popular lift is probably a set of King springs and you can get those, as a package along with new struts & shocks on ebay - you can buy the springs separately from Kings directly, or you can get Ironman or Dobinsons springs.

The least expensive lift is probably Mazda springs on the rear with KYB struts in front, along with your original springs, but, this doesn't work for all iOs - will it work for yours, well, we don't know, because you haven't given us enough detail about your car - all the information on lifts can be found in the suspension section of the forum.

As far as snorkels go, the only iO specific snorkel I'm aware of is a Brazilian made one (OGZ) which is very difficult to get outside of Brazil, there is supposedly a Jeep one that is a good fit, again, this has been discussed before, a quick search of the forum will find the details.
