As per title, how do you remove the roof bars on a 1999 5 door IO?

I have removed the end and centre caps and removed the exterior 10mm nuts and philips screws but these bar will not shift!  I dismantled the front of the head lining to se if there are any bolts holding the bars on from inside the car but it does not look like there is any access.

The chap in the Mitsubishi dealer parts department said this was a rare car to have these rails but maybe this is only the case with European Shogun Pinin models? Think it was called Sorrento in Japan.

Sorrento is a "sub model" or trim level.

my iO is a Sorrento - as far as I know once you remove the nuts that secure the feet (the ones you already removed) there's nothing else to hold the bars - but I've never tried removing mine.

. Yep, I've removed the nuts

.

Yep, I've removed the nuts etc and they are hold fast.  Maybe they have bonded themselves on around the thread of the bolts??

Anyway it is starting to rain and looks like the weather is due to be fairly dire all weekend now so I am giving up for now.  Perhaps the rain might clean out around the bolts now they are exposed - I'll give them another yank on Monday. yes

Found out how to do this

Found out how to do this today.

After unscrewing the 10mm nuts and removing the two philips screws you have to slide the bar back about a centimeter and it will then lift off.  The bar will pull itself out of the front leg.  To remove the front leg you have to slide it towards the front ot the car.  To remove the black cover trips I just gently prized them of a bit at a time with a screwdriver trying my best not to break the clips.

Manky tree bits underneath

This is one of the clips under the black trim.  You have to fit it back onto the trim to refit, don't put it on the car first like in the picture.

is it possible the mountpoints cause leakage?

Hi there,
I am trying to fix a leakage on the right side of the car. (left drive car).. the ceiling gets wet just above the upper right corner of the windshield. .... tried to fix it to fill it with a non hardening paste stuff... leakage still there :(

my next move was to get the roof bar off to see if there's a leakage at the mounting point.

Is it possible there's a leakage there? Or would I be wasting my time getting the bar off? (and risking breaking stuff)

as you recently got it off, you might remember how it looked.

thanks for any advice!

bruno

From memory

I remember when trying to figure out how to remove the bars I removed the A pillar trim and gently bent the roof lining back.  From the little space I had using a torch to see in there and feeling by hand I could not find any connections through the roof skin at all.

I suspect the leak you have is from the windscreen.  Perhaps removing it and refitting may be the best fix??

leakage

wow.. that was a quick reply! thanks! refitting the windscreen might be the best solution... but something i never did in my life... so it would be my last option :)

the glass itself doesn't get wet at all on the inside.. that's why i thought it was something else.

it just rained now.. i took some pictures. (car standing still, so it wasn't wind blowing water in odd places with force)

maybe i should get the black side trimming off to check underneath (i wanted to post a picture with this post.. but failed to figure out how to do that:( )

To upload pictures you click

To upload pictures you click the green box next to the text colour option, click "browse server", click "upload", click "choose file", then click "upload".  After it has uploaded click on the picture and then click "ok".  Very long winded but that's how it is!

If anyone knows an easier way I'd really like to know.

Possible cause??

How rusty is the car?  Maybe water is getting in from a rusty area under the seal at the top of the windscreen?

What luck.........I just happen to have those bits of trim off my car atm!

Getting dark here now in London but as you can see it is completely sealed...........unless the seam has come apart on yours - unlikely but this leak is an odd one!??

That is where the windscreen seals.

No, just be careful not to break the clips......they will probably be brittle.

Great! thanks!

Great! thanks!

Still not 100% clear to me how to get it off..  looks like I have to use a knife to lift it up a little and then slide it away from teh windscreen to get it off.

I'll have to give it a go.    Too bad it's raining right now..I'll have to wait for better weather :(

I am almost certain the roof

I am almost certain the roof rail mounting points are external with no penetration into the cabin.

other possibility would be

other possibility would be the water is coming from above the windows (the rubber cover)...   i see no other possibility ....

if it's dry tomorrow i should test it with water...  first letting it run into the mounting points..see if it gets thru ... and the run it from the front... maybe that way i can locate where its coming from....

Found the Leak!

I know you are all dying to know how it is going with my leak...  so here's an update :)

I found it... it was not the mounting point itself, but the seal in the little "gutter"  next to it..  (see picture below).

I am 100% positive it's leaking..tested it with water!

Sealed it again... hoping I did a proper job and it keeps dry!

Interesting...

That knowledge might come in handy - I need to pull the rear "covers" and the trim behind them to "sneak" electrical cables underneath - I have an LED "camp light" mounted on the right rear corner of my roof basket that is yet to be wired in, and hopefully, in the not too distant future, the left side will be sporting a roll-out awning also with LED lighting.
