Running hot
my 2000 io 1.8 runs hot sometimes, or actually, only in these situations:
on a very hot day (summer temps of 32-38deg C)
when i drive up hill on the highway (@120km/h) for long stretches
when i drive on the highway (@120km/h) and have the aircon running
whenever i tow a trailor
it has never over heated, the temp rises to about 80%, sometimes 90%, and when it gets close to the top i either have to slow down, pull over, or try and freewheel if possible to prevent it over heating. the temp drops back to normal within 4 or 5 minutes.
i've flushed the radiator and replaced the cheap radiator cap, which seemed to be leaking, but this didn't help.
any thoughts?
getting hot
Do you loose coolant? How many kms have your beast? Unfortunately it could be a lot of thing, worn water pump, damage head or head gasket, dirt in the circuit, flow problem with the radiator, fan sensor faulty, wrong coolant or no coolant (water only)...as well as what was mentioned by Fordem and Nzio or like the radiator cap.
Sometime, it can be hard to solve (like a half worn water pump impeller) while seeing the car, even harder without seeing it....
Happy io.
Rewire the fans at your own risk ...
As mentioned previously the fans are ECU controlled, they are variable speed and you run the risk of controller damage if you parallel the two fans.
The right side fan is the radiator fan, the left side in the a/c condenser fan. Based on personal experience the vehice can be operated under the circumstances described with only the radiator fan functioning, without overheating or running hot.
Why not start by determining why your fan is non-operational and fix that - trust me - the ECU is smart enough to turn the fan on when it's needed, so if the fan isn't coming on when it should, that's what needs to be fixed
Hi Guys I am having the same
Hi Guys
I am having the same problem on mine.
2002 2.0Mpi with 254000km.
Brand new Radiator fitted due to crack on the old one top tank.
New Radiator cap.
The problem persists.
I removed the thermostat and tested it in hot water - it does open +- 6/7mm.
So i guess i need to have a look at the twin fans. To be honnest i didn't. I will do so when my wife gets home after work today.
Is there a post/thread on how to test the wiring?
And what exactly is that problem?
Because I would say the two previous posters have different problems - the first one never mentions fans, the second says one fan is working, and you haven't checked yours - so is yours running hot on a very hot summer day? when driving uphill? driving on the highway with the a/c? on or towing a trailer?
Is the new radiator exactly the same as the old one - same thickness?
Save yourself the trouble ...
Put a volt meter on the connector - do you have votage or not.
For what it's worth - I've been running my iO without that fan for quite some time now - and have no complaints - highway speeds with a/c no problem, highway speeds uphill wth a/c no problem, parked idling with a/c no problem (and that, by the way is the a/c condenser fan) - maybe if I were towing or on an uphill slog in 4L it might run hot, but so far, so good.
I'm Not Sure
Francois, was the problem always there (at least since you have the car) or it just appear....a bit at a time ?....suddenly ?
Happy io
Claude the problem might have been there ever since i bought the the car. Bought it second hand tho with 213000km on the clock. I can remeber it running above half way under some circumstances but from day one i bought the car.
I recon it must have been dead alwalys?
So if i stand in front off the grill, the fan on my L/H side is A/C and R/H for cooling?
Problem Solved

Fordem i found the problem! But i've done my testing in the reverse order. First i checked all the fuses then relays then i tested for voltage at the connector plug and there was 12v+ supply at plug. I then took the fan cowling assy out. I then tapped on the fan motor and it started spinning slowly then stopped when a/c disengaged but the fan didn't start spinning again when a/c came on.
So i decided to open the fan motor and found some wear on the armature where the brushes makes contact, fixed it and problem solved. Tested the fan and both now spinns together. Just need to test it as before when heat gauge creeped up.
I will give feedback probably tomorrow.
Cheers and Thanks
Sounds like reduced air flow.
You sound like you have some sort of a circulation issue - either coolant circulation, or air circulation - you flushed the radiator which theoretically takes care of the coolant side of it, so now lets check the air side - are the fans working? My 1.8GDI has two fans, controlled by the ECU via a fan controller mounted on the back of the right side fan - one way to check is to run the a/c and make sure both fans come on.
It's also possible to have the fins of both the a/c condenser and the radiator clogged with accumulated dirt & mud - so inspect those and if necessary hose out with a gentle stream of water, preferably from the rear.
