I read thru all the posts on how to improve and lift the front strut on the io's. I was wondering if its possible just as a cost effective thing to put in spacers between the coil and the body? I read about something like this but could not make out if its the same as I want to do. If someone did do something like this please reply and put some pictures in as well. Maybe a drawing to speed up the process as well

You sure can, theres quite a lot of DIY lifts done this way. upto a max of 50mm without a diff drop. Its basicly an extension of the top hats on the struts.
The cheapest and probably easiest way I have seen this done is with a short bit of pipe (90mm ish) with flat plate on the ends with holes drilled to suit the strut top bolt pattern.

This is the Stud Pattern as I measured it in the car.  Holes will need to be 8mm or so, I think the 7mm was the stud OD.
