Hi, I've had my 'new' io for a few weeks now and after spending a lot of time googling around for info on wheel sizes, cambelt change procedure, workshop manuals, etc. I realised that I kept finding the best info and advice here, so I may as well stick around and say hi laugh

My name is Don and I live in a rural spot about an hour's drive north of Wellington. The io is a 1999 1.8 sohc, burgundy and silver, done 133,000kms with two lady owners and by the look of the underneath every one of those kms was on tarmac - it really is in very good and completely original nick.

I've had a couple of problems to look at with it - it's got the common issue of a flashing orange light on the dash which I temporarily fixed by unplugging one of the sensors on the transfer box but I need to sort that out properly at some point, I'm guessing a new sensor is what's needed (I found the thread on that). The other issue is a sticky hot/cold vent flap which makes it impossible to change the temperature in the cabin. I've greased the white plastic gear mechanisms and cable on each side of the heater box and everything looks like it's as it should be on those bits, but within a day or two of freeing it up it's stuck again so the problem must be in the vent flap or hinge. Next step has to be to pull out the dash to get to the heater box - definitely a rainy day job that one!

I'm looking at options for a 2nd set of rims with offroad tyres and interested in what's been said about using Jeep and Mazda Tribute wheels. I'd like to find a set of 15" rims that fit if I can as there's a much better choice of offroad tyres for 15 than 16".

That's about it. I never knew anything about these cars until I bought one, but I really am enjoying this little pint sized offroader - it's funny how some vehicles get under your skin more than others.

Welcome aboard mate! sounds like you found a good example, apart from those little problems you have.

and like Daniel said, what plans do you have, if any? :) obviously some new tyres on 15s, what size 15s you after?

I've never been much into 4WDing before, but I am thinking once I've got some grippy tyres on it I'll get in touch with a local club and do some days out. The future mods list will depend on whetehr I get hooked and want to do more I guess, but obvious ones look like adding a bit of lift and I like the sound of a front diff locker - but I've spent enough time in motorsport to recognise the top of a slippery slope when I see one....

The first priority is a cambelt change - the previous owner didn't know if it had been done, although it's well due for it, and there's no record of it on the Mitsubishi dealer network so I've got to assume it hasn't. I'm picking up the bits this avo and will do that in the weekend if I get time. I've got the manuals here and from elsewhere for the 4G93 but any tips welcome - it's not obvious from reading the manual procedure how you get the tension exactly right, but maybe it will be clearer when I'm looking at the engine. I've had two cambelt failures with expensive consequences before (one from a stone getting in behind the timing cover, the other a disintegrated tensioner roller) so want to be sure I get it right.

I'll keep a set of road biased A/T tyres on the original rims and get something like an M/T for the 15" rims (when I find some). I don't know what I'll get yet - I'll wait until I've found some rims as I might end up having to stay with 16".

No pics yet - I'll take the camera out with me next time.

Might be over your way in a few months, considering the lax import laws you could easily import one of the 2L turbo Io's straight from japan! even a half-cut could be interesting for an engine transplant!

I draw the line at timing belt replacement at home, it's the one job that will root your ride if you screw it up. Even though I can do it - I always take it to a dealer to get the timing belt replaced. Considering all the other home-servicing I do I recon I'm still ahead after paying $800 per 100,000kms for a timing belt change :)

I'd never heard of the 2l turbos until I read about them here, but its tempting for sure. Having said that, the reliability of a simple and unstressed N/a engine is also something nice to have....

I thought I saw an ad for

I thought I saw an ad for a 2L but I must have read the year it was made by mistake - the only ones I see for sale here now are 1800 turbos.
