I have an NJ Pajero and I'm looking to buy an iO to add to the stable.

I thought I'd ask the people in the know, you guys, What is the best iO model released that's available locally?

I still have a bit of reseach to do but need a starting point.

I want to make sure I don't get the wrong one and regret it.

best io

If mine would "disappear" I would try to find another 2002 ZR, 2 litre. I like the 3 doors, but the 5 doors have some obvious advantages. If you check "redboook.com" they have all the model listed and a value estimate.

Best iO available locally ...

But no location - how do we answer?  And "best" can vary from person to person, situation to situation.

For my needs, a 3 door is too small, so it would have to be a 5 door - you have a full sized Pajero, that you're supplementing so your needs might be different - we have 1.8 MPI, 1.8 & 2.0 GDI, mostly automatics, I know they're available with a 5 speed manual, but I have never seen one - my iO is a 5 door 1.8 GDI with the AW4 automatic & SuperSelect 4WD -  if I had to choose again, it would be the 1.8 MPI with a 5 speed.

Why MPI and not GDI?  Engine complexity and parts availability - if the high pressure fuel pump were to fail, odds are I would end up scrapping the car (or swapping the engine).  Same reason for the 1.8 and not the 2.0 - part availability.

Why 5 speed instead of the AW4 - personal preference.

When I say locally, I mean

When I say locally, I mean Australia. I'm sure there were variants available in other countries.

As with any series of vehicle, there is almost allways a stand out model and also one to avoid.

In the case of the Pajero you can't really go wrong but there is one model that is above the rest in the Gen 2 series, that being the NL, '97-00.

This is why I ask the question. I want another 4WD but a smaller more economical one but still capable.

I know next to nothing about the iO's so I have a bit of reseach to do. Like which is the best engine, what options were available, what aftermarket accessories are available, what will interchange from other models, it's almost endless.

I've had my NJ for over 10yrs and still learning about it.

So any input would be greatly appreciated.

Australia.

I would say the one to avoid is anything with the GDI engine, I don't think that was offered in Australia, although there could possibly be used Japanese gray market imports, I know that's happening in New Zealand - they're good engines, very economical when running right, but have a history of "coking" up the intake, and as mentioned previously, a replacement high pressure fuel pump comes with an astronomical price tag.

Apart from the quirks of the GDI engines, if off road usage is critical, be aware that there are not too many options for gearing and lift - other than that, I'd say they are pretty solid little cars.
