oh and btw let us know how

oh and btw let us know how the rally goes!!!
also about the bar. i probably would have tried to make it look more like an xrox bar.
ive been lookingat them recently, and they come in 3 pieces of which you bolt together yourseld. you have trhe middle bit at the front. and the the 2 "wings" bolt onto that at either side. its a pretty good way of doing it i think...
im really keen to try to make my own now after seeing this and researching these xrox bars...
couldnt be too hard (i hope) lol
i just need to know how they will mount onto an iO...

That's pretty good.

Pipe bumpers are not my thing, but that's excellent work yes and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too difficult to redo the wings in sheet to match the center yes

Pipe bumper

Ok here is the breakdown of how the bumper looked in pieces and semi built up.

Here is a 6mm profile that replaces the factory fitted cross member at bolts onto the chassis on both sides.

Here it shows another profile that just get welded ontop of the cross member profile. This assembly acts as the base where the complete bumper gets welded on.

Here is the centre portion "semi assembled". This will be where the which can be fitted

Here is another pic of the complete cross member

Here is the cross member with the "Wings" welded on. This will be used as adjustable slots for the centre portion

Here is the centre portion held by hand to get an idee what it looks like

Here all the centre pieces was on but i wasnt happy cos it sticked out to far (+- 100mm) from the body

I then took away all the smaller profiles that could made you move the bumper forwards and backward because it was already at the max backwards

Ok and then all the rest was fitted and welded together. I still need to take more close ups so that you guys can see what it looks like.

front bar fixation

Again, very nice work. From the pics and description, my concern is that you only have the front bar holding with 2 bolts, one on each chassis (I might have missed something!) If you are going to put a winch on it might be wise to improve this, a couple of 90° plate going from the bar to each side of the chassis may be an option....not sure....

Happy io.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEAH!

Thats what I am talking about, Love that style of front bar, not the prettiest things, but they look tough.  Sometimes I wish I worked in an industry that involved cutting and welding metal!

What are the laws like over there with custom bars on cars with air bags?

I like Claude am curious to how well its attached to the car, they would want to be some damn tough bolts!

Isn't the air box on the other side?

I hate to rain on your parade, but if I'm not mistaken, the air box is on the left - and the right side has the battery, underhood fuse panel and front ECU - I believe that's a lot of work to move.

Its pointless keeping the stock air box if your going to put a snorkel on. There is no way it is water tight.

Two things ...

singlecell wrote:

I have two responses for you - first - have you ever fitted a snorkel?  For example - a Safari snorkel from ARB?  Do you want to go make that statement to ARB?  And just so it is clear - I picked that product for no other reason than it's one of the best known and most widely marketed brands, from a world respected vendor.  Hopefully they know what they are doing when it comes to designing and fitting snorkels.

The Safari snorkels, as do the majority of commercial snorkels on the market, connect to the stock air box on whatever vehicle they are marketed for.

The second response is - and you will find I refer to this in my previous post, it is in fact the reason, I pointed out which side the stock air box is on - go pull the hood on your iO and see what's involved in fitting a snorkel on the right side - even if you choose to get rid of the stock air box, you'll probably want to keep the snorkel on that side.

Yes I have fitted a snorkel before, two infact.  Both cars had air boxes completely different to the IOs, both of them were sealed boxes where the air filter sits inside. Whereas the IOs filter isn't inside an airbox its just wedge between two halves of a box.

I was no disagreeing with your statement that it would be hard to connect a snorkel on that side. Just that the stock box is not really a good option for keeping water out.

i would tend to agree with

i would tend to agree with singlecell in that the stock box isnt really watertight... but as for the use of a snorkel i think "pointless" maybe to harsh a word. i know its a figure of speech but as you stated its not really a good option...

To be honest ...

Like singlecell I am not impressed with the stock airbox design on the iO - my first experience with it was when my wife brought her Lancer home from the dealer after it's first 600km service and complained this car is making a funny noise - I went outside, started it, and immediately knew that the it had an intake leak - so I told her take it back and tell them to fix the air intake problem they had created.

The problem is that the lower part of the assembly is held together by a "hook" arrangement, which quite easy to break or to become dislodged whilst the element is being installed and since it is not visible from above additional care is required to make sure it seals - nevertheless - if proper care is taken the assembly IS both air & water tight at that joint - there are other openings through which water cam make it's way if the vehicle is driven through deep enough water.

Incidentally - I don't think a watertight stock air box exists - maybe on miltary vehicles, but certainly not on commercial production - there is usually a small drain hole that the snorkel manufacturer's installation instructions will point out and instruct you to plug or block with a screw and some sort of sealant - the drain will usually be on the "intake" side of the filter medium - to prevent dust from being sucked through the opening.

Would I use the stock air box with a snorkel - that's a decision I would have to make if/when the time comes - but at this point - I'd say probably.  Here we tend to use the snorkels more to get the intake above the dust cloud, than above water.

Snorkel

Ok ok, just to calm everybody down you have to know that i got it for free. lol A mate of mine sent it from his warehouse where its been laying for ages as he brought it from chin to see if the market would like it. He wanted to fit it on his toyota hilux but it didnt fit and after checking it it fitted on the io (windshield angle only) i also picked up that the battery and ecu was in the way but its not impossible to make it work. I thought of routing it from the body panel down to the radiator all the way to the air box but was concerned that the suction from the normal system would have not been enough. ok now is the good part, after some extensive research i found out that the jeep grand cherokee's snorkel does fit perfectly and its on the right side.

ARB - I know they make the best snorkels in the world no doubt but do the make one for the io? In south africa any ARBparts is very expensivebut maybe its cheaper there in AUS as its a local company but here its not for the ave joe. Ok so now you know which snorkel fits, start sourcing. Good luch

At a glance that looks like it would fit quite nicely - once you figure out how to couple the outlet to the air box.  For $68 I'd take one and try it - just that it'll cost me a lot more than $68 to get it here

unfoirtunately no they dont. if they did im sure half of us australians would have already fitted one. a bit of a shame seeing as the have them available for even the new suzuki grand vitaras and jimnys.. i know i keep comparing the iO to the jimny or vitara (amongst other threads), but its probably the closest comparison i can find...

ARB has very little for the iO ...

That however is not what I want to mention ...

One of the biggest gripes that I have heard from Australians about ARB is their pricing policy - believe it or not - it is often less expensive for an Australian to buy an ARB locker from a US supplier and pay to have it shipped back to Australia, the same would probably go for something light like a snorkel, but not a large heavy item like a front bar.

ARB owned stores and dealers are encouraged to quote suggested retail pricing (SRP) - as strange as this may sound the SRP does not change, a pair of coil springs is $X, struts are $Y, and shocks are $Z regardless of vehicle make & model, I went to both of the ARB resellers in Guyana for quotations and watched them work the pricing out - in the US they are forced to compete based on pricing, so there are heavy discounts available from online retailers, provided you know what you're looking for.

I imported the OME suspension on my Vitara and installed it myself, saving around 40% of the cost quoted by the local dealers to supply alone.

Anyone outside of Australia looking for ARB product - try getting a quotation for what you need out of the US, it might be cheaper, for Australians, it usually is.

Just a couple of pics after I made my bumper to show you guys what a huge difference the bumper made from an approach angle point of view

That's the problem with tubular bumpers - now let's see you do a "five fold tapered wing" ARB style :D

It definitely makes a difference - the question is now - do you have the power & traction to climb that ;)

It's not really visible in any of the pictures.

Pipe bumpers leave much of the tire & suspension components visible - because the pictures are taken from fairly close up, the focal point is above the bumper so you don't see this area, a picture taken from further away or lower down will reveal the "gap" he's referring to.

This is all personal preference mind you - the "gap" is the reason I'm unlikely to ever use a pipe bumper on one of my cars - it's fine on a dedicated off roader, but on a vehicle that spends 80% of it's time on the street, it's not the look I want.

The advantage of fielies design is that it is adaptable, he has a sheet "winch mount" center section, with pipe "wings", if you have access to a sheet metal brake, folding sheet wings is not too difficult.

I spent several hours designing something similar for my GV, and "mocked" it up in corrugated cardboard, but my priorities changed and the "prototype" is on a shelf in the office, unlikely to be transformed into steel in the near future.

I took some pics with the cam but left my laptop at the office so the proof will have to sleep over till tomorrow. after building your ideas you only realise how much more you could have added but will have to do for now as i have a trip next weekend and it was made for this. 3 Door Sliding Bin System

Sorry for being so late but didnt think it would have taken so long. I came to the conclusion that you have to have all the right tools otherwise you will get frustrated and loose interest.

Ok gents as promised

This is after I assembled everything. I used 25mm SQ tube material.

Please dont look at the handy work yet. LOL I used plastic connection pieces to get all the parts together. What a mistake, next one Ill be sure to get everything cut to size and weld it all together.

Ok here she is in the back with the slider only laying loose in. Here you can get an idea of how it would look.

Just a further view of it

Showing the space on the driver side

Showing the space on the passenger side

This was last night at work, I was doing most of the work in my garage at home but due to not having all the right tools, space & good neighbors I settled for our work shop.

I build the frame that attached both slider which later on will be the base where all the goods will be stored on.

At last the thing is looking like something

Just showing that it can actually move inside the box. LOL wink

Ok now this where I really got excited because it started looking like a bin system, well almost.

Ok now its a bin system. LOL

Ok all done, I added dome "doors" at the back of the seats for easy access when everything is packed tight. I built it around using two plastic ammo boxes. They fit next to each other on the sliders to pack all your clothes in one, and the other the groceries leaving a little space behind them for two camping chairs.

Ok so that is how I built my sliding bin system. To be honest, when I started building and assembling it I saw so many new ideas and improvements but due to a time constraint I had to stick to the original plan. The system is about 97% complete but it will have to do for the weekends trip I have.

Nice work, I have used these plastic joint on a few project using aluminium tubes. Instead of using rivet (they look like rivet on the pictures), try using small screw, the rivet tend to damage the plastic. I am pretty sure that when you will have all the timber screwed to the frame it will be good. How are you going to fix it inside the car....and are you going to paint it or use carpet?

Nice work,

Good buy all

Hello guys,

Its with a heavy heart that I should tell you that I sold my IO and bought another SUV which I always had a soft spot for. As you all know people with an IO gets a passion for the little beast and tend to do research to the extend where the designers knows nothing and you everything. LOL After all the mods I did on mine, time, effort, sweat & blood....tears came to my eyes when I gave it to the new owner. Ill always have a soft spot for the IO's and think when I have more money ill get another IO which I will import and mod to the teeth. Thank you very much for all the help & advise during the past two years. I will still pop in often to see what all the guys have been doing. Here is my new toy

Defender

Hello Gents,

Its good to see so many closet land rover fans. HA HA HA Yes I love my new toy and its been a live long dream of mine as well. The main reason I went for the defender is obviously the legendary reputation, but the actually for parts availability here. There is not al ot of them on the road as Toyota's or Ford's but the guys has such a passion for them and you can get parts and advice every where.

Just to add more injury to the IO owners. Its comes out std with 235/65/16, i have 265/75/16 BF MT on and you can go as big as 285/75/16 without lifting it. The suspension is so simple. At the rear - solid axles with single shock and coil. At the front - solid axle with single shock and coil. To lift it I only need a longer shock and coil and you have it, its an hours job then you have 2 inch and more lift.

The engine is a 2.5 TD5 motor with a lot of power. There is a lot of turbo lag currently and feels like you drive a tractor but when the power band kicks in, its all smiles. In two weeks time im getting her re-mapped to the same std as the Land Rover Discovery which eliminates the turbo lag and also get the CAT removed, Then looking at a bigger inter cooler.

The main purpose I bought her is to do over landing trips which will be happening in 2013 December. We planning a trip starting in South Africa (Pretoria), Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and back home. Its about 6000KM in three weeks. With the IO it would have been done but not comfortably.

Io and Landrover

As always, nice pictures....and nice to hear from you again. I am curious, what would be your feedback between the two car (age aside), fuel consumption, handling, performance.....We all know that the Io is better, I just want to know how close is the Landrover devil

Happy...io ??

IO vs Land Rover Defender

Well in all honestly.....its very difficult to compare the two as one is made by Japs and the other the Brits. wink The design of the defender wasnt changed for many many many years.....it wasnt broke, so they never fixed it!!!!!

Performance: The 2.5 Tdi motor in the defender cant be compared due to the low down torque and turbo vs my 1.6 I had in the IO. In the beginning I had turbo lag but took it in to a performance shop and they remapped the ECU and replaced the complete exhaust system with a free flow. The KW after the ECU mapping went from 50 to 90KW. When I put my foot down and it gets to 1600RPM...all hell brakes loose and sounds like a V8. angel

Handling: The IO was a very nippy little thing especially in traffic. Being closer to the ground, the center point of gravity was much better as the defender. The defender is over 2 Tons so it makes a huge difference. Being so big as well, people tend not to take chances pushing in front of me.

Fuel Consumption: With the IO i used to get 10-11 Km/L vs 9-10.5KM/L on the defender which is not bad taking into consideration its a 2 Ton vehicle, has 32'' mud terrain tyres on and has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Part availability: With the defenders being many years in manufacturing and at some stage manufactured in South Africa at the Ford Motor Corp there is allot of local supplier. Many companies buys written of defenders and strip it for spares so 2nd parts is always available. Just to give you guys an indication a full service for the defender is R1400 incl all filters and oils.

Why own a Land Rover

The MAN FACTOR: Now this is something you cant explain to any person. Defenders are just down right awesome!! No matter how many stickers you stick on, or how many extras you bolt on anywhere on the vehicle, it just keeps getting better and better. No matter the wet knees and feet on rainy days, the rattles and squeaks or even road noise...no matter the fact that the consumption is not always good or the wheels are expensive...the need for adventure trumps all...every day when i wake up i sit up and the first thing i look into in the driveway is my shorty, then i smile and know on my way to work the jappie heads will turn and the jaws drop...as i rumble down the streets the cats duck for cover and the dogs bark...the ground trembles and the path lights up...then i know...this is where i want to be...this is where i need to be, with all the body aches after a long day in the seat the one semi deaf ear and the searching for gears and listening for new noises...after all of that...There will be only one! There will be only greatness! There will be a Defender!!

Is a defender for you: You will know as soon as you get behind the steering wheel and all of a sudden you smile for no reason.

So do I think the Defender can be compared to the IO???? Read this post from the top again cheeky
