Rear flex

Dont know if this is as far up as one side can compress, but it gives you a fair idea.

Actually the snorkel should be happening today.  I have all the silicon bends, just deciding what to use for the straights.  Stainless steal, alinimium or pvc.

Will post photos later today.

Things I would do better if I had known:

Cut more away from the inner panel.  I couldnt fit a hose clamp on the inside end of the 90degree hose as there wasnt enough room in there. Glued it for now, will fit it one day.

Fit up the top opening so it doesnt have the slight upward faceing angle, and have a grill on it.

Fit somehting to the filter housing to release any water caught by the rain.

My stock filter box had to be replaced, it was just the filter wedged between to parts of plastic. Not water proof in the slightest. Also the pod filter makes a badass noise.

Ah yes I forgot to say I am going to paint it black.  I would have today but its raining.

snorkel

Nice, kept you busy! I haven't seen that filter before, is it from K&N? do you have more info? what sort of filter does it have? do you think that it need something to drain the water from the rain, I guess it does, unless the entry point have some special design...

What would you say about any change ie power, noise?

Now serious business, I saw the fishing rod!... I hope that they are not dusty!!!

There are a few rods against the wall in one of the photos.  I did the work at my fathers place and they are all his.  No need for concern Claude they get used well.

Also the filter box is off of ebay, its just a cheap one.  Its just a normal pod filter but the filter itself make up one end of the housing.  Your not meant to be able to fit off the shelf filters to it. But in a few thousand Kms Ill try, or just clean this one with a compressor.

Fielies, I would have liked the upper tube to have been closer, but the fram of the car is about an inch in from where the side of the car is. So you could have to find a way to have that 45degree angle bend up and also in, but then still point straight.  Its hard to explain without a photo, Ill take one tomorrow.

Yeah I knew what it was, didnt really bother me though.  The car isnt a daily driver for me, its just my fun play around car. So I am willing (almost keen) to do things to it that I wouldnt normally do.

On a side note, today I am putting in the LSD that I removed from the 5door io at the wreckers. Woo!

Well, after alot of farting around and getting my diff out, turnes out the LSD from a 4 door isnt a direct swap, the 4 door seems to have slightly thicker axles with a couple more splines.  Would have been better just to get the entire diffhousing/axles but didnt know that at the time, and now the IO at the wreckers is goooone.

Also noticed that the LSD diff itself was longer then mine, maybe by an inch.  So I am left with my standard diff.

That sounds like a very frustrating time - nothing to say really but commiserations, it sucks when after so much cost and effort you have to put things back to how they were.

NZIO it sure was, in the end its a lot of effort to just change the diff oil! haha.  Luckly the whole job only cost me like 50 bucks in the end.

No the ram points directly forwards atm. What I am saying is that the gap between the lower tube and the car is differnt between the upper tube and the side of the windscreen as where the corner is the cars body takes a sharp turn in that you cant get a setup like this to follow.

I have to remember to get a front on photo.

PS. Took my new steel wheels into the powder coaters today. woo.

rear diff

This is unreal....different diff what a pain in the wrong place, so by this we could think that Bob, and my arb RD05 diff lock cannot be fitted to a 4 doors....sad, very sad...

But we can't even say that all 4 doors are the same, Themis car is a 4 doors, and he does have the RD05 arb diff lock....go figure that one out!! maybe he swapped the axle....or the complete diff

While this is an extreme way of doing an oil change on a diff, this experience is a very good information for the forum, I will put a note in my built thread with a link to here.

Happy io

The ARB locker probably just reuses the parts of the diff that are not common between the cars.

Generation thing?

singlecell wrote:

Might be a generation thing, or a1.6 thing, your io is a bit weird considering it has the new body and old struts.. In any case the arb only reuses the crownwheel and pinion, new dif centre and side gears

Yeah I was thinking it might be a 1.6L thing too.  I have the newer high pan struts though, and what I thought was the older body, I thought the newer body had the grill with more stripes to it?

Is it an illusion?

There seems to be some metal missing from the edge of the rim - to the right of the picture - and the valve hole isn't quite round - an optical illusion or rust damage?

It is matt black, the flash was making it look a bit grey. I never wanted to leave them white, but when i was first quoted 100 bucks per rim to paint, when i only paid 95 for them it was tempting to leave them alone. But I was able to get them all done for 175 so I went for it.

I am going to be getting some Hercules trail diggers M/Ts, 245/75Rs I think. Money is the only thing stopping me from getting them right now!

Painted the snorjel black today and here it is. I left the hose clamps silver as I thought it might break it up a bit. Unsure how I feel about it.  I might just paint the second one form the left (the one on the tube) and see how it looks.

Also note I have the top of the mounted back a little far in this.

Wheels are on!! I had centre caps to cover the middle of the hubs but my mate at bobjanes said they looked silly when on the car, so Ill have to have a think what to do about that brown centre.

Best part is they only stick out about 10mm ish.  So I am not going to bother with flares for now, unless some of those decent looking stock ones come up on ebay for a decent price.

Car does look like it could do with another 2 inchs of lift now though....

Also note my snorkel top faces back the other way now, the dicky facing forward one got to me in the end.

new wheel

Nice set up it does change the complete car!,  before doing a lift, see how she goes as your new tyres probably gave a few cm. How does the engine copping with the bigger tyres? Did you end up with the 245/75? and you said that these rim are +18, but are they 16 by 6.5 ?

Some mat black on the center should look great....once you are going to hit the dirt road and do some 4wd...they will bring a big smile on your face!!!

Yeah I am not planning on lifting it unless it needs to be, I was just saying it would look better with one, lol.

Yeah they are 247/75s and the rims are 16 x 7. I havent noticed any difference in power between these and my old ones.  But I never drove the car with stock rims/tyres so I cant really compare it to how the car should handle anyway.

I plan on getting them nice and dirty today and might have to perform a rain dance also.

is there any rubbing with the tyres? it almost looks like they wouldnt even fit under the arches under compression?

i want a lift now. did you use strut extenders for the front like nzio did? with dobinson coils. and for the rear was it just ba astina springs and thats it?

I got dobinsons springs front and rear on new style struts. And yeah i have those strut extenders like NZIO came up with to centre the strut.

I am going to go see one of the fitters at work to see if he can make up some of those strut spacers to go on top of the strut and some block to do a diff drop, if he can do it cheap enough ill do it just so it looks badass.

oh so you used the strut rods

oh so you used the strut rods from your old struts?
maybe i should seriously look at doing it that way instead of going with konis. will be a lot cheaper... is the flex in the rear still decent. how firm is it?

laslty how much did your tyres cost?

Correct, I always had the newer model struts. I pulled some old school ones out of a car at the wreckers and had a fitter at work make up the extenders for me.

I was going to go the koni path buy I couldnt find one that gave me more travel so I thought why bother. I dont mind the ride in the car at all.  If you look in my thread somewhere you can see the rear flexing a bit, and another one in the actions shots. I think the flex is pretty good.

The rims cost me 90 each, and the tyres 220.  I know the guy though so I suspect those arnt retail prices.

No rubbing. At least not while road driving.  Keep in mind the offset of my rims is keeping the rubber away from the struts. It would be damn close to hitting those struts if it was on stock rims.

looking at your lift as it is

looking at your lift as it is now, im real tempted to buy the dobinsons right now. i have money laying in my account for the purpose of going towards my suspension.
problem is im still unsure what i want lol... but i think i like your setup... looks sick and sounds like it performs quite well. i may even just do what you have done and the if i want ill get konis later on. coz im only looking at around the 1.5-2" lift anyway...

where did you buy the from? Suspension Stuff?
